Though keeping a somewhat quiet profile, this expressionless and distant teenager seeks a position in SeeD. His ambition isn't shortsided, however. Squall will become quiet involved in topics or events which interest him. Carrying a gunblade, a combined sword and gun, Squall is determined to graduate from the Garden and persue a promising career with SeeD. It is rumored Squall has some kind of relationship with Laguna Loire, founded from a dream. However, the extent of this relationship is still unknown.

Once a proud soldier, Laguna has become a successful and determined journalist. Among his friends and comrades, Laguna is a well-respected and optimistic figure. Laguna originates from Galbadia, an opposing force to SeeD. Laguna has some sort of relationship with Squall, who encounters him in a dream. However, the extent of this relationship and its purpose is still unknown.

Although somewhat shy, Rinoa is very straightforward and honest with those around her. Her tenderness, warm-hearted, kind compassion makes her very endearing. Throughout the game she appears to develop some kind of relationship with Squall, though little is known about her. She is equipped with a projectile weapon called the Blaster Edge. Rinoa originates from a forest town called Timber. However, Galbadia soldiers took over the town. As a result, Rinoa created a resistance movement called Owl of the Forest. Her resistance has caught the attention of the Balamb Garden and SeeD, which her and Seifer have become "allies". Galbadia takes over a satellite system in Dollet and publicly broadcasts a declaration of war against the world. Learning a witch is behind the decisions and threats from Galbadia, Rinoa seeks out SeeD for help in destroying her. Seifer, Squall, and Zell are dispatched to Dollet, accompanied by Rinoa.

Growing up as a rich boy, Zell joined the Garden at the ripe age of 13 to follow in his grandfather's footsteps as a proud and powerful soldier. His honor and integrity fit his military ideals like a glove. Though he may be short tempered, Zell does possess a thick sense-of-humor. Through his rough attitude and stagnant experience, Zell is martial arts master and powerful warrior.

Selphie joined the Garden as a recommendation to SeeD. Classmate and friend of Squall, little else is known about her.

Joining the Garden at the age of 10, Quistis' amazing fighting skills earned her a position in SeeD at 15. Now she teaches at the Garden and is named the "Trepe Teacher" by her students.

Though Seifer is a talented and worthy fighter, his short fuse and lack of responsibility lost him the right to join SeeD. His jealousy for Squall's talent has made him extremely bitter and rambunctious. His rivalry against Squall feeds his endless ego and his need to be the best. Strangely enough, he bears the same scar Squall has on his face and is equipped with a gunblade as well. Seifer is a law enforcer at the Balamb Garden, assisted by Raijin and Fuujin.

Irvine is student of the Galbadia Garden, responsible for an unprovoked attack and takeover at a satellite system in Dollet. A little overconfident and somewhat of a loner, Irvine claims to be the best shooter 'round. Not much is known about this character except the fact he wears a cowboy hat which, by his picture, is painfully obvious.

Little much is known about Cid in Final Fantasy VIII, except for his high position at the Garden. Squall and several other characters have a shared past in which they've grown to care and respect him for. Cid's beliefs on the development of Garden soldiers are relatively humane. His students are elite and are feared throughout the Garden.

Edea is almost unmistakably an evil, villainous character in the story. Although very little is known about her at this point, she seems to come from a powerful family of witches and appears in a "witch parade" during the game. Nonetheless, she exhibits a sense of vulnerability and loneliness that implies a depth of character beyond simplistic evil. Edea is believed to be behind the malevolent intentions Galbadia has made against the world. In an attack against Dollet and a takeover of their satellite system, the president of Galbadia made an offical broadcast to the world of their declaration of war. Witches are known to have mind controlling powers to some extent. In many screenshots, Edea is seen with Seifer and Rinoa. Whether these two characters are victims of her power are still unknown.
